To the northwest of Los Angeles, Ventura is located on the Californian coast. The Ventura River flows through the western part of the city, which is defined by a narrow valley with sharply sloping terrain on either side. The steep foothills of Ventura border the northern part of the hamlet. A significant portion of the eastern part of the city lies on a flat alluvial coastal plain running along the western edge of the Oxnard Plain. From the slopes to the Santa Clara River, which marks the city's southern boundary, several Barrancas extend. At the beginning of the Santa Clara River Valley, the city reaches Saticoy, a historic settlement.

Ventura has been inhabited by the Chumash Native Indians and other groups for more than 10,000 years. The city received its name from the Mission San Buenaventura, which was founded by Junipero Serra in 1782 after the arrival of Spanish missionaries. During the Mexican secularization of the Californian missions, San Buenaventura was granted to Don Jose de Arnaz by Governor Pio Pico as Rancho Ex-Mission San Buenaventura, and a small settlement began to take shape there. San Buenaventura was eventually incorporated as a city in 1866, following the American invasion of California. Ventura underwent significant development and expansion thanks to the tremendous oil boom of the 1920s and the subsequent post-World War II economic boom.
