The oldest city in Georgia and Chatham County's county seat is Savannah. Established in 1733 on the Savannah River, Savannah was the initial capital of the state of Georgia and the British colonial capital of the Province of Georgia. It served as a critical port city during the American Revolution and the Civil War and is now a significant industrial hub and Atlantic seaport, with a population of 147,780 individuals as per the census, ranking it as the fifth-largest city in Georgia. Additionally, the Savannah metropolitan region, Georgia's third-largest, had 404,798 inhabitants in 2020.
Each year, millions of tourists come to Savannah to marvel at its cobblestone streets, parks, and impressive historic structures. These include the Georgia Historical Society, which has been operating continuously since its founding and is the oldest historical society in the southern U.S.; the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the first public museums in the South; the First African Baptist Church; the third-oldest synagogue in the United States; and the Centennial Building. The oldest antebellum rail facility in the U.S., now a museum and visitor center, is also the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
