The seat of Davidson County and the capital city of Tennessee, Nashville boasts a population of 689,447 according to the 2020 U.S. census, making it the most populous city in the state, the 21st most populous in the U.S., and the fourth most populous in the southeastern region. Situated on the Cumberland River, Nashville serves as the central hub of the rapidly expanding Nashville metropolitan area.

In honor of Francis Nash, a Revolutionary War general, the city was founded in 1779 and quickly flourished due to its prime location as a port on the Cumberland River and as a center for railroads in the 19th century. During the American Civil War, Nashville seceded with Tennessee; however, in 1862, Union forces captured the first state capital of the Confederacy. Following the war, Nashville regained its footing and grew into a manufacturing powerhouse.
