Fort Myers has a rich history that began in 1850 when it was named after Colonel Abraham Myers, who served in the United States Army from 1833-1861. The city was named after a local fort constructed during the Seminole Wars. Myers later became the quartermaster general of the Confederate States Army from 1861-1864.
Nowadays, Fort Myers is an important entry point to the Southwest Florida region and a favored tourist destination in Florida. It is popular for its delightful weather, beautiful beaches, and diverse attractions. Among the city's notable landmarks are the winter estates of Thomas Edison ("Seminole Lodge") and Henry Ford ("The Mangoes"), which visitors can visit.
