Iowa's city of Des Moines is unique in that it serves as both the state capital and the most densely populated city. It's also the county seat of Polk County and partially extends into Warren County. The city was officially incorporated on September 22, 1851, under the name Fort Des Moines, which was later shortened to Des Moines in 1857.

The Des Moines River is believed to be the source of the name for the city of Des Moines, which is thought to have come from the French expression "Rivière des Moines," translating to "River of the Monks." The metropolitan area, which includes six counties, has a population of 699,292 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau's 2019 estimate, ranking 83rd in the United States. It is also the most populous metropolitan area located solely within the state.
